Since then Virgin Australia (one of their more useful partners) has just
about completely stopped releasing business
class award space.
An alternative is to go via Tahiti or Fiji with decent
award space, and you can read
about that below in the Business
Class section.
They're also reasonably good
about releasing first
class award space, though it's not as much of a guarantee.
While their primary hub is in Madrid, Iberia is fairly good
about releasing business
class award space between Miami and Barcelona, especially in light of the fact that they're not otherwise all that great
about releasing
award space.
This is one of the reasons I almost never can get excited
about the various US Airways promotions — they block Lufthansa first
class award space.
Air France flies from Toronto to Paris and has good business
class award space, so this is a good way to get to just
about anywhere in Europe for cheap.
I'd recommend using United miles to book Lufthansa first
class — you avoid the higher surcharges that are now charged with Aeroplan
awards, you don't face Starnet blocking as you do with US Airways (more
about that below) and you use a lot fewer miles than you would with Miles & More miles, although it's true that only Lufthansa's Miles & More members get advance access to first
class award space.
Japan Airlines offers one of my other all around favorite first
class products in the world, and they're pretty good
about releasing
award space last minute as well.

award space is wide open in First
Class from New York to Los Angeles or San Francisco.
Anyway, there's no doubt that Cathay Pacific isn't quite as generous
about releasing first
class award space as in the past.
But
space does open up before that as well — typically
about one to two weeks out, Cathay Pacific will open all but three first
class seats for
awards.
@ AsiaFlyer — Not quite as reliably, but Cathay Pacific is fairly good
about opening last minute business
class award space within Asia, so I'd keep monitoring.
