Anyway, there's no doubt that Cathay Pacific isn't quite as generous about releasing first

class award space as they release first class award space, since they actually sell business class.

as Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa, Emirates does not have a regular schedule for releasing first
class award space to their partner airlines.
Business
class award availability on Qantas is very difficult to find, but not quite
as difficult

Of course, purchasing miles when you know that
award space is available can still make sense in such situations
as it's usually cheaper than buying a first or business
class ticket outright.

This typically means paying less than the listed price for business or first
class as long
as award space is available.
Well, given recent events, including Lufthansa no longer releasing first
class award space in advance, that competitive disadvantage isn't
as major of a point anymore.
They're also reasonably good about releasing first
class award space, though it's not
as much of a guarantee.
For example,
as you can see below there's Qantas first
class award space from Los Angeles to Melbourne, though it's for March 3, 2015, which is outside the window which AAdvantage members can book.
I'd recommend using United miles to book Lufthansa first
class — you avoid the higher surcharges that are now charged with Aeroplan
awards, you don't face Starnet blocking
as you do with US Airways (more about that below) and you use a lot fewer miles than you would with Miles & More miles, although it's true that only Lufthansa's Miles & More members get advance access to first
class award space.
Japan Airlines offers one of my other all around favorite first
class products in the world, and they're pretty good about releasing
award space last minute
as well.
Note that first
class award space may continue to be released
as it gets closer to the flight, so don't give up after you've checked 14 - 17 days out.

class CP flight from HKG to JFK with aadvantage miles
as soon
as that
award space is released on ba.com, and if I then wanted to go from JFK to AUS on the same
award ticket, then that

awards with American Airlines miles,
award space is wide open in First
Class from New York to Los Angeles or San Francisco.
They release tons of business
class award space, so lock that in 11 months out, and then
as the departure date approaches you can lock in first
class award space.
There is not
as much Japan Airlines First
Class Award space open between the US and Tokyo
as there was in February, but a smattering remains.
But while Air France business
class award space does now exist for Delta Skymiles members it is not at all the same
as what's offered to Air France's own Flying Blue members.
So if you're flexible
as to the gateway you fly out of or the exact time you fly, you should have no problem snagging first
class award space.
But the real key to easily snagging Cathay Pacific first
class award space is understanding just how much
award space they release
as the departure date approaches.
But
space does open up before that
as well — typically about one to two weeks out, Cathay Pacific will open all but three first
class seats for
awards.

award space in First
Class on the Etihad A380.
The American Airlines flights to Hong Kong have virtually no
award space on them on that moment, but I would rather fly Cathay Pacific's premium cabins than American Airlines» anyways
as they are much superior products — read my trip report when I flew Cathay Pacific First
Class from New York to Hong Kong.
As of March 8, there was no
award space on the A380 in First
Class for any date it is scheduled to fly.
