If you prefer, you can book a business
class award ticket... but the taxes and fees for each person will be the same
as those on a first
class award.
This is especially frustrating for business
class and first
class award tickets, and even worse if you book on an airline that hits you with steep carrier - imposed surcharges (such
as British Airways).
Additionally, Delta has announced that
as of June 20, SkyMiles members will be able to use their miles for a number of other products including upgrades to some cabin
classes, selecting preferred seats,
ticket change fees,
award ticket redeposit fees, same - day confirmed fees, and external
ticket charges.
As per

ticket from New York City to Honolulu costs 35,000 Elevate points in economy and 80,000 points in business

award ticket would be just

The number of HawaiianMiles required to book an
award ticket is determined by the regions involved in your booking,
as well
as the
class of service.
As you can see, first
class awards to Asia can get very expensive, but business
class tickets are more reasonable, especially with zero fuel surcharges.
If by chance the
award you're looking at goes down in price (which will be true for economy and business
class tickets to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America,
as well
as economy
class tickets to India and the Middle East) then you may also call American and ask them to re-price the
award to refund the extra miles back to your account.
Some European and Asian carriers already take it to greater extremes,
awarding as little
as 10 % of the distance flown with deeply discounted fares but 300 % for long - haul first
class tickets.
For Economy
Class flyers this will probably make little difference
as the British Airways Executive Club already essentially factors in the cost of a fare when it
awards Avios — that's why the cheaper Economy
Class tickets only earn Avios based on 25 % of the distance traveled.
You could stretch the 237,500 miles for 7 one way business
class tickets to India
as you need only 40 % of the miles needed for an
award ticket and you can purchase rest of the miles during the booking process.
Members will earn
award miles based on the flight distance2 and the purchased fare
class for the following
tickets and flights, with some exclusions
as listed at the bottom of this page.
Since Qatar's new product is going to be
as nice
as a first -
class product, you may want to book this product and save an incredible 90,000 miles for a round trip
ticket versus a first -
class award.
Under the new system for
award miles, flights on partner carriers not issued on 016
ticket stock — meaning they don't earn PQDs — will earn
award miles based on distance flown and fare
class as under the current system.
American have continued their assault on
award redemptions to Hawaii by implementing a 40 % increase in the number of miles needed for a Business
Class ticket but, in the case of partner
awards, this doesn't make much difference
as most people would be flying to Hawaii on American Airlines and not a partner airline anyway.
If you prefer, you can book a business
class award ticket... but the taxes and fees for each person will be the same
as those on a first
class award.
Of course, purchasing miles when you know that
award space is available can still make sense in such situations
as it's usually cheaper than buying a first or business
class ticket outright.
Since Virgin uses two cabin planes and doesn't count its main cabin select
as an intermediary
class, it's possible to upgrade
award tickets directly from the main cabin to first
class.
In fact, first
class tickets cost the same
as or less than the business
class awards offered by the other alliances.
Business
Class awards cost fewer miles (62,500) but you'll pay the same taxes and fees
as you would for a First
Class ticket so, if you have the miles, First
Class appears better value.
Of course,
as I discussed in my first article on travel hacking theory, I do value that
award trip at more than $ 790, in fact, I value it at about $ 1,300, since that's what I'd typically pay for an economy
class ticket to Europe.
As a reminder, you need 80,000 United miles for a one way business
class award ticket to India.
That may be
as much
as 10 % of a full - fare
ticket — easily $ 500 or more for business
class awards to Europe or Asia.
A round - trip
ticket in first
class normally costs $ 14,833 but can be booked
as an
award for 140,000 miles.
As with American Airline
ticket awards, United
awards are one - way, giving you the option of combining different
award types and
classes of service to create a round - trip travel itinerary that best suits your needs.
As Alaska has no way of knowing how much you paid for your
ticket with American, this fare
class award chart is the only way they can be sure someone isn't earning thousands of more miles on Alaska than American would give to their own flyers.
As you can see, even though we don't usually recommend booking a premium
class award ticket with Membership Rewards points, there are exceptions.
This is a huge reduction in miles for economy
class fares, but it is only fair,
as American Airlines also plans to
award customer traveling on the cheapest fare (discount economy
tickets fare) fewer miles
as the
ticket is likly to be inexpensive.
Note that the child's
ticket must be in the same
class of travel
as at least one
ticketed adult; you can't redeem a first
class award and pay 10 % of an unrestricted coach
ticket for the lap child.
An
award ticket in Lufthansa business
class costs the same amount
as an
award ticket in Austrian business
class, and I have to assume a majority of my readers would appreciate knowing with which their miles are better spent.
Another possibility is to do a mixture of
awards and paid flights and / or even have one parent and the child travel separately,
as my family often does, in order to book premium
class award tickets.
You'll need more lead time for premium
awards, such
as an international first -
class ticket, than you will for a domestic economy flight.

class CP flight from HKG to JFK with aadvantage miles
as soon
as that
award space is released on ba.com, and if I then wanted to go from JFK to AUS on the same
award ticket, then that
award space for AA wouldn't yet be available, correct?

That chart has some real values, such
as the ability to fly business
class between the US and Europe for 90,000 miles roundtrip instead of the usual 100,000, the ability to pop around Europe with several extra flights thrown in for 115,000 miles in business
class instead of 100,000 miles roundtrip plus another 20,000 miles for each and every additional intra-European flight, and the ability to fly to Australia in business
class via Asia (not normally allowed on a single
award ticket) for an extra 25,000 miles — and make stopovers in Asia, and throw in Australian domestic flights at the same time.
Considering the fact that United does not pass on carrier imposed fuel surcharges for
award tickets even on partners, some people prefer to book partners such
as Lufthansa with United miles to avoid these charges, even though 70,000 miles is higher than other programs would charge for that flight in business
class.
