While economy award flights are generally competitively priced on both charts, business and first
class awards on partner airlines are almost always overpriced.

You can book
airline awards on Turkish
Airlines or Lufthansa via Star Alliance
partners such as United, using 70,000 United miles each way in business
class or 30,000 miles in economy.
Unfortunately, it's very rare for a
partner to have access to international business
class award space
on Singapore
Airlines.
Promo
awards, offering 25 - 50 percent off the standard
award chart, are available each month for select flights, but most passengers will spend the bulk of their miles
on classic
awards, which can be used
on any
partner airline but not
on first
class cabins.
Finally, those who hope to book some of the most luxurious
awards on partner Singapore
Airlines will find their attempts thwarted: any
award in this carrier's first
class cabin
on an Airbus A380 or Boeing 777 - 300ER is blocked in the system.

For example, miles can be transferred to ANA
Airlines of Japan, and 104,000 ANA miles can be redeemed for a round - trip
award flight in business
class between the United States and Africa
on any of ANA's Star Alliance
partners such as Lufthansa, Turkish, Ethiopian, or South African

class partner awards, there is much less competition for these seats than you would find
on other
airlines.
Award mileage accrual for tickets
on partner airlines that are not issued by United, and for specialty tickets where United does not know what fare was paid (including unpublished, consolidator, bulk, group and tour tickets), is based
on fair
class and distance flown, not the cost of the ticket.
From the continental US to Europe in Business
class, a one - way journey costs: 62,500 miles
on Air France / KLM, 50,000 miles
on American
Airlines, 60,000 miles
on British Airways or a steep 105,000 miles
on Emirates and you can't mix and match
partners on the same
award.
The program is still good for coach and business
class awards, good for
awards on United, but will not at all be good for
partner airline awards in international first
class.
Right now, United.com is showing discounted saver level
awards on partner airlines in business
class to Europe.
However, Singapore
Airlines recently announced that they'd be opening up more
award space
on their «premium» routes to Star Alliance
partners, like
on the all - business
class Newark and Los Angeles to Singapore routes.
While
airlines are raising the price of their first
class award redemptions (United announced a recent hike from 160,000 to a whopping 280,000 miles for first
class from the US to the Middle East
on its
partners, and Delta will not even allow fliers to cash in miles for international first
class seats), there are still some good deals out there.
Negatives: • United miles were devalued
on February 1, 2014 so you will need a lot more United miles if you want to redeem them for international
awards on partner airlines (especially for first and business
class flights).
