class of service, you first start by purchasing your airfare (hopefully
using your new BA card to earn triple

I'm happy that I'm going to get to try out the Iberia A350 Business
Class cabin without having to find a good long - haul Business
Class fare (or burn a lot of
Avios / AAdvantage Miles) but I'm delighted that I got such good value out of the 3,000 Ultimate Rewards points I

class from New York's JFK to Madrid
using Iberia

The ability to fly American Airlines domestic flights with
Avios and business
class flights to / from Madrid from several US cities make this program a great way to
use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
On the flying front British Airways took a hatchet to the Executive Club earning rates (amongst a lot of other things) earlier this year — Most Economy
Class tickets earn a lot less
Avios than they
used to.
If your main source of
Avios is from flying on discount Premium Economy fares or Economy
Class fares and you like to
use your
Avios to book long - haul premium cabin flights, then there's an excellent chance you should be collecting AAdvantage Miles instead.
Again, the
Avios can be
used to redeem for first -
class upgrades on British Airways flights (upgrade cost will vary be flight).
Similarly,
using Avios on Alaska will cost the same 12,500 points each way in economy
class and 37,500 points each way in business
class.
As a result, I think
Avios from both programs can be a smart way to
use Membership Rewards to book business
class.

Avios and thought it was a great deal.
I generally wouldn't recommend
using British Airways
Avios for business
class awards to Europe because the fees can be so high but if you fly on a partner from the East Coast, it's not bad at all.
We looked at a business
class booking from LAX to EDI this summer that had surcharges of ~ $ 2,500 on the BA website when
using Avios.
As for my return, I booked Lisbon — Frankfurt — Chicago in Lufthansa First
Class using 62,500 Air Canada Aeroplan miles, transferred from American Express Membership Rewards, and then Chicago - Pittsburgh with 4,500
Avios (there wasn't availability on the United flight, plus I would have had to have called Air Canada to book a 3 - flight one - way itinerary which would have incurred a $ 30 phone fee, so I was okay with spending
Avios and flying American over United when a terminal change would be required for both).

I love
using Avios because it's only 4,500 points for a one - way economy
class ticket for a flight within 650 miles.
Using the formula, to upgrade from Premium Economy to Business
Class would cost: 50,000 (Business
Class cabin I want to upgrade to)-- 37,500 (Premium Economy cabin I'm booking in) = 12,500
Avios.
This makes sense for anyone that would either book a Business
Class ticket anyway or who might need to book British Airways flights to London
using Avios because of the huge fuel surcharges.
That being said, there are still some great redemption opportunities
using British Airways
Avios, in particular for shorthaul flights in coach or business
class, where you can get a roundtrip for as few as 9,000
Avios.
However, the problem with
using Avios is that britishairways.com is terribly buggy and requires some finessing to be able to book awards, like first
class on three - cabin planes, which they often run on transcontinental routes.
But now that you know the best
uses, you can get terrific value for your
Avios, regardless of whether you prefer economy or premium
class, or tend to take either international or domestic flights.
For example, if you wanted to
use Avios to book American flights, flying transcontinentally from New York to Los Angeles would only cost you 9,000
Avios with this bonus instead of 12,500 each way in economy, and 18,000
Avios instead of 25,000 in business
class.
