Shar - Pei is not very high maintenance, however it should be brushed to remove loose or dead hair occasionally.

Grooming: The
Shar - pei's short, bristly
coat needs regular brushing.

coat should be bristly and coarse, as befitting the breed name (
Shar - Pei means «gritty sand dog» in Chinese).
Shedding varies according to
coat type, but regular vacuuming is important when there is a
Shar - Pei in the house.

It is fairly common for new
Shar - Pei owners to develop a mild skin sensitivity to the harshness of their
coat — especially in the shorter horse
coat variation.
The
coat of the Chinese
Shar - Pei is rather rough, the translation of its name literally meaning «sand - skin», and petting one feels a bit like stroking your hand across sandpaper.
Although the CSPCA acknowledges that flowered (spotted), bear -
coat, and mini or toy sized dogs can occasionally be produced by two standard
Shar - Pei in any reputable breeding program, it should be emphasized that this organization is opposed to the purposeful breeding of any non-standard
Shar - Pei in order to intentionally produce nonstandard dogs!
Dogs that have the shortest life expectancy include Dogue de Bordeaux and Irish Wolfhounds that only live for about five to seven years; Boxers and Bullmastiffs that live from about eight to ten years; Chinese
Shar - Pei that live from eight to ten years; Great Danes that only live for between seven and ten years; Chow Chows, Curly -
Coated Retrievers and Collies that live from eight to 12 years; African Boerboels, French Bulldogs and Mastiffs that live to about nine to 11 years.

Shar - Pei should be judged on equal footing without giving any preference to either
coat type.
Anyway, after a week, our
Shar Pei's skin and
coat started looking so unusually good and problem free that I saved all the rest of the food just for him.
