In Haze (2003), a work recently acquired for MCASD's collection through a grant from The Annenberg Foundation, Donovan assembled thousands and thousands of clear plastic drinking straws against the walls, turning a gallery into an undulating space of indeterminate color.
The inaugural exhibition, Some Place Like Home, is a group show that is as diverse in the mediums shown as the artists involved, Rumney Guggenheim curating a collection of work that coaxes audience participation in a way that is far from the customary white wall gallery style programing.
Von Heyl's inspiration for this commissioned mural, part of the Museum's Wall at WAM series, was Ellsworth Kelly's Orange White, a 1961 abstract painting in the Museum's collection (which will be on view beginning February 17 in the new late 20th Century galleries).
