society as a separate entity moving along a track from less modern to more modern, the
critics of modernization theory argue that
societies interact with one another as parts of a larger system.

Richter's high reputation among both art
critics and art collectors is based largely on his technical abilities and inventiveness, although it may also be partly due to his pragmatic
view that art has a limited power to transform
society - a
view somewhat at odds with Germany's previous artistic icon Joseph Beuys (1921 — 1986).
Its ironic, sometimes highly satirical criticism of contemporary
society in China, greatly impressed Western art collectors, although it was and is
viewed with ambivalence by Chinese art
critics, who feel uncomfortable with its fame in the West.
I
view this as a major weakness of the
critics because such policies are what
society should be talking about.
