There isn't much to root for there — Aidan seems selfish, his kids are cartoons, his
dad's a jerk — and
yet Braff manages to infuse his script with enough pearls of pop wisdom and clever
jokes that the movie is nonetheless entertaining.
We live in a society where the default is straight and we witness that throughout the film, most especially with Simon's
dad, Jack, who enjoys making the occasional inappropriate, and very male,
joke or asks Simon whether he has a girlfriend
yet.
