It may seem that Novak is now skirting the discredited
Deist view that revelation is merely a republication of the Book of Nature, that Scripture merely reminds us of what nature already testifies.
But
this Deist view of nature (as the manifestation of divine reason) was soon replaced by a Cartesian world view that set human reason outside and above nature.
Deist views penetrated university circles in Germany, began a questioning, critical view of the Bible, and became influential in the erstwhile Pietist center, the University of Halle.
