Delta award chart (which of course doesn't actually exist, wink, wink) means that when lowest -
level redemptions aren't available on any airline and you're considering a more expensive
award,
Delta may actually be cheaper than the others thanks to all their intermediate
award tiers.
While
Delta SkyMiles can be tough to use for booking
award flights to Australia because of incredibly high redemption rates, your miles can be useful if you find saver
level award space.
Hopefully after some of the initial fanfare dies off, the
award and cash prices for
Delta One on the A350 will come down to the
level of flying
Delta One on any other aircraft.

A word of warning about how
Delta's
award booking engine works: if any flight segment is lacking Low
level availability, the overall miles cost will be increased.
It's almost impossible to find low -
level awards to Hawaii with
Delta.
In theory,
Delta offers the same deal as United or US Air for redemptions to Hawaii: low -
level awards begin at 20,000 miles each way.

If you ever manage to find low -
level award availability with
Delta, you could make a killing redeeming cheaply - earned Virgin Atlantic miles for that
award, though I certainly wouldn't hold my breath.
There's also a special
award chart for
award flights on
Delta, as long as there's low -

A Virgin Atlantic agent confirmed to me that only transatlantic
award costs are changing (to align Virgin and
Delta) all other
awards on
Delta (e.g inter-USA, USA to South American etc...) remain at the existing

Since you can only have partner
awards at
level 1 prices, if you book
Delta at anything other than
level 1 you pay extra for the connection on a partner airline.

That said, those of us in the hobby do know that a «low
level»
award to Europe in
Delta One is currently supposed to be 70,000 miles each way or 140,000 miles return (and only on
Delta metal as Virgin Atlantic is now surcharged to 85,000 miles or even more if booked last minute).
United drastically devalued its business and first class
award levels a few years back, then
Delta followed suit and recently American.
