New York Times did a piece on this in June:

genre often steeped in hype, for once even the «diabolical»
label doesn't feel like hyperbole.
Labelled a «feminist rape - revenge movie», it takes all the traditional tenets of that most dubious of
genres and simply
does them again.
The film oscillates constantly between different
genres and tones, and it doesn't want to be
labelled.
However, since love story is not an official BISAC
genre — blah, blah, blah — I've
labeled it a romantic fantasy (or is it fantasy romance — I don't know).
Readers don't need these
labels and actually like mixed -
genre books.
Rock Band 2 doesn't have a «post-punk» category, per se, but it certainly has enough related tracks to warrant another bracket:
genre staples like Devo and Talking Heads, revivalists like Maxïmo Park and the Killers, and close calls that take the
label to its logical extreme (e.g. Sonic Youth, which is more rightly referred to as a «noise rock» band).
The «sandbox»
genre is a
label loosely thrown at anything that has a small area to freely explore these days, many of which don't really offer the true liberties of what has been seen years prior.
