GALECA's take on the awards season
includes nominations for television,
documentaries and some
categories that are uniquely their own, like the Dorian Awards for Campy Film of the Year, Wilde Wit of the Year (honoring a performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse) as well as a Timeless Star to be revealed later.
James Ivory received the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for «Call Me by Your Name,» which played at the Ross earlier this year, and three of the awards,
including Kobe Bryant's Oscar for «Dear Basketball,» were in the short film
categories — animation, live action and
documentary.
In addition, Sundance is also
including a new From the Collection
category that will feature 20th anniversary screenings of Clerks and the
documentary Hoop Dreams.
The 16th Annual Tribeca Film Festival announced the top winners in all five feature
categories were presented to women - directed films,
including Keep the Change (Best U.S. Narrative) Son of Sofia (Best International Narrative) and Bobbi Jene (Best
Documentary).
The Netflix hit is being submitted for Emmy consideration in a variety of nonfiction
categories,
including Exceptional Merit in
Documentary Filmmaking.
Films submitted in the
Documentary Feature
category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other
categories,
including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those
categories.
Other winners
included Jean - Marc Valee, whose work on «Big Little Lies» saw him pick up Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Mini-Series, while «City of Ghosts» director was honoured in the
documentary category, and Reed Morano beat off competition from «Stranger Things» Duffer Brothers and three «Game of Thrones» directors - Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor - to take the drama series prize for «The Handmaid's Tale» episode «Offred».
The Academy Award
categories number 24 and
include both narrative and
documentary films, plus a handful of special honors.
There are 16 awards to be won in 13
categories,
including eight filmmaking sub-
categories in live action,
documentary and animation, alongside Reviews of the Year, Teacher of the Year and Film Clubs of the Year.
Categories include Western Traditional novel, Historical novel, First novel, Non-fiction, Biography, Short Fiction, Short Nonfiction, Juvenile Fiction, Drama,
Documentary Script, Children's book, Poem and Song.
Additional
categories which will receive awards
include a youth audience award (chosen by attendees aged 5 - 12) and special mentions for the best short film and the best
documentary (full - length) feature.
This wide - ranging, multidisciplinary
category could
include art typically defined as sculpture, performance,
documentary photography, and even large - scale interventions in both man - made and natural environments, such as wrapping architectural landmarks, or sketches and maquettes related to MOCA Jacksonville's Project Atrium series.
