abuses, revealing that these companies
do not always observe even minimal best practices when it comes to
animal welfare.
The hefty sentence won't reverse the pain and torment Puppy
Doe went through, but supporters of
animal rights hope the
animal cruelty
case will send a message that
animal abuse will not be tolerated.

In the
case of neglect,
abuse can be the result of ignorance, such as when a pet owner didn't recognize that a pet needed veterinary treatment; or when it is the result of behavior that a person should have known would cause harm to
animals but allowed to continue.
The main reason given for not prosecuting
animal abuse and neglect
cases is that it takes the officers the same amount of time to investigate and gather the evidence for an
animal investigation as it
does for crime investigations involving people.
In 2014, the PAWS Act was passed, which stiffened fines and penalties, required veterinarians to report suspicions of
abuse to authorities (keep in mind if the veterinarian who initially treated Puppy
Doe hadn't had the foresight to report her findings to ARL, this
case may have never seen the light of day), and established the
Animal Cruelty and Protection Task Force, who was charged with providing future protections for
animals in Massachusetts.
As was the
case with Rescue Ink, its members seek out the most heart - wrenching of
animal abuse and neglect
cases, and
do whatever it takes to correct the situation, making sure the cameras don't miss a second of it.
