I know many of you are fans of the theory of operant conditioning and
clicker training, but as many of us found out when we took this into the real world and used it as
dog trainers, we saw it didn't always work as promised in many real world situations.
The interesting thing is to see that a.) None provide any credentials proving their methods are better; b.) they don't like the tone of the article — then again, a lot of people, when all they
do is talk among those who only agree with them get offended when they run across someone that isn't in lock step with them; c.) they try to attack me personally, as a «hater», which is totally unfair and judgmental about someone whom they have never met; d.) can't point to any specific
dogs with significant accomplishments that have been
clicker trained — hunting, police, obedience, tracking, etc... and just finding a specimen or two isn't very convincing evidence... get enough
dogs and sometimes you'll find the genius
dog that almost
trains itself; e.) there is no point by point refutation of what I've said, supported by third party evidence.
You couldn't go from beginning to end,
training a
dog to
do the entire range of police work tasks and skills with
clickers.
You don't have to
train behaviors, like a
clicker trainer would, by waiting for a
dog to «offer» some random behavior, then reinforcing it, and each additional approximate step along the way.
Some
dogs can even be scared of the clicking noise — if you don't find any
clickers that suit them you shouldn't force
clicker training and instead practice other positive
training techniques.
In fact, many people that get the hang of
clicker training get pretty addicted to time spent «playing» with their
dogs as we
do the dance together, each playing our part.
While a
clicker isn't absolutely necessary for
training a
dog, it
does help to ensure that you are getting the exact behavior you want from your
dog.

train using praise and food rewards alone, and I find that adding in the
clicker can be confusing for novice
dog owners who are already struggling to manage the leash and treat bag without dropping everything on the floor.
Most
clicker trainers
do not advocate physically pushing the
dog into position, as that is counter to the force - free philosophy of
clicker training.
