Even after years of refinement, the dual - clutch automatic still rattles and clunks and hesitates
in urban
driving, and while the suspension is more forgiving than ever,
selecting Comfort
mode for every
drive still isn't enough to appease our aching backside.
Mercedes dynamic
select also allows the driver to
drive in Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport +, and Individual
modes.
The ride, aided by those optional magnetic shocks, is firm without being overly so, and
in any case a simple toggle of
Drive Select allows tailoring the suspension response (along with the throttle, steering, and exhaust) from Dynamic into Comfort, Individual, or Auto
modes.
In most other respects, the Audi R8 Spyder matches its coupe progenitor, with a 12.3 - inch Virtual Cockpit color display for the driver, a four -
mode Drive Select function, audio speakers integrated into each seat for top - down listening, and a minimalist interior with racy touches like a steering - wheel - mounted engine start / stop button.

drive system keener to send power rearwards.
Shift paddles let you
select four different
driving modes: (1) automatic for unobtrusive performance; (2) minimal brake regeneration for highway cruising; (3) maximum brake regeneration for optimal off - throttle deceleration
in traffic and during sporting
driving; and (4) an automated

Better to tweak
Drive Select's Individual
mode to ramp up the engine's responses but put the steering and suspension

Better news comes
in the shape of software tweaks, from the dampers to the
Drive Select modes, also exhibited on the latest RS4 Avant.
From these data, the control unit of the Porsche 4D Chassis Control system determines the effect on the actual
driving state of the car and modifies the damping force on each of the wheels
in accordance with the
selected mode.
When
driving in normal
mode the shift strategy can be a bit reluctant to drop a gear or two, but
select Sport
mode and it's too keen to kick down — and then hangs on to gears too long.
In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package,
selecting SPORT or SPORT PLUS
mode activates the dynamic throttle - blip function, which ensures the optimum engine speed for every downshift, a more emotional
driving experience and an impressive sound.
The control unit evaluates the
driving conditions and modifies the damping force on each wheel
in accordance with the
selected mode.
For
driving in particularly challenging conditions, such as snow, the driver can
select «4WD Lock»
mode.
It uses a seven - speed automatic transmission with a smart accelerator pedal that
selects the optimal combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor
in the four
driving modes and three transmission
modes.
In addition, a three - way manual override switch enables the driver to

in a more relaxed fashion than the always more aggressive - feeling Mercedes - AMG E63.
