Circus Circus has been around in Durban since 1996 and although I've frequented both the Musgrave and Gateway franchises (and the Pietermaritzburg branch come to think of it); I'd never visited the beach café.

The fact that we have always known that beaches like Jeffreys Bay (Jbay), Muizenberg, Buffels Bay and Durban are top notch surfing meccas, does not mean the rest of the world's estimated 35 million regular surfers have cottoned on to the idea.

Point Yacht Club beach (at Vetch's Pier, on the harbour side of uShaka Marine World) is less busy, but there are no life guards (if it's any consolation, it has some of the gentlest waves of all Durban's beaches).

Whilst a swim at North Beach or Vetch's Pier is still one of the best swims you will have in Durban, the school holidays (particularly during December) see these beaches so inundated you may want to give the beachfront a complete skip.
