Matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP - 2, MMP - 9), commonly named gelatinases, are two key extracellular enzymes involved in
ECM remodeling, which is an essential step required not only for angiogenesis, but also for metastasis [32], [33], [34].
Altogether, our results demonstrate that kahweol is a potent anti-angiogenic compound both in vitro and in vivo, targeting some key steps shared with tumor progression, key molecules involved in
ECM remodeling (MMP - 2 and uPA), and key molecules involved in inflammation (COX - 2 and MCP - 1).
It will also examine how exosome secretion is linked to VSMC migration, proliferation and
ECM remodelling and hence vascular pathology.
