In response to Colorado's new
teacher evaluation system, a system plagued by ambiguity
and fear, CEA funded our grant request to recruit NBCT
and other master elementary,
middle and high school teachers in Cherry Creek
Schools, representing Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, Science, World Languages
and ELL, to participate in a professional development activity centered on best practices
and the new system.
Specifically, across subsamples of Latino / a students — separated into groups of low achievers,
middle achievers,
and high achievers —
teachers almost consistently perceived
ELL Latino / a students as individuals who demonstrate less effort in
school.
In elementary
schools,
teachers face the challenge of teaching the 3,000 to 5,000 words per year that researchers recommend to ensure that
ELLs do not become long - term
ELLs in
middle and high school (Biemiller, 2011; Calderón, 2011; Graves, August, & Carlo, 2011).
