etrade and frostbank after all are) are for private
banking of the kind you're looking for.
The Ally
Bank Online Savings Account has a current yield of.89 % (Updated 1/09/12) APY, which seems generous compared to contenders like
Bank of America's savings account (returning a measly.10 % APY) offered in Illinois, or even
ETrade's Complete Savings Account at 0.40 % APY.

I then attributed this momentary eclipse to the fact that
ETrade had expanded their investment product offerings and
banking area, thereby coming across as the more «all around broker».
Still, long term investors may also want to consider brokers like Scottrade,
ETrade or Sharebuilder (the latter two also have well developed
banking and money management platforms), or a mutual fund company like Vanguard or Fidelity.
I'm not interested in the obvious «put more into your
bank savings account,» I'm looking for options fairly close to an IRA (trading stocks on
etrade also out) to save more.
