In its place is a second speaker, giving the phone stereo
sound, and Apple has developed a set of
EarPods with a Lightning connector that will be included with the phone.
Anyone that knows what music is supposed to
sound like knows that the
EarPods are a poor conduit for it.
Had Apple done something, anything, to help improve
sound quality for the masses — which upgraded Lightning

Apple's not making any big deal about redesigning the
sound of them, so I would expect them to
sound like the
EarPods.
But AirPods
sound just like
EarPods because they're basically
EarPods without wires, so what you're getting for your $ 159 is convenience and early adopter status, not necessarily
sound quality.
The phone ships with Apple's
EarPods that not only look but
sound impressive.
At the very least, Apple also includes Lightning - native
EarPods in the box, which
sound fine but literally only work with iOS devices.
Bottom line: If you find the
sound of
EarPods acceptable, you'll be perfectly happy with how the AirPods
sound.
