In 2010, more than 1 in 5 children were reported to be living in poverty.6, 10 Economic disadvantage is among the most potent risks for
behavioral and emotional problems due to increased exposure to environmental, familial, and psychosocial risks.11 — 13 In families in which parents are in military service, parental deployment and return has been determined to be a risk factor for
behavioral and emotional problems in children.14 Data from the 2003 National Survey of Children's Health demonstrated a strong linear relationship between increasing number of psychosocial risks and many poor health outcomes, including social - emotional health.15 The Adverse Childhood Experience
Study surveyed 17000 adults about
early traumatic and stressful experiences.
Relative to children with no ACEs, children who experienced ACEs had increased odds of having below - average academic skills including poor literacy skills, as well as attention problems, social problems, and aggression, placing them at significant risk for poor school achievement, which is associated with poor health.23 Our
study adds to the growing literature on adverse outcomes associated with ACEs3 — 9,24 — 28 by pointing to ACEs during
early childhood as a risk factor for child academic and
behavioral problems that have implications for education and health trajectories, as well as achievement gaps and health disparities.

As we discuss below, one recent
study found that family stability trumps family structure as it pertains to
early cognitive development even after controlling for economic and parental resources.26 It has been shown that children living in stable single - parent families (that is, families that were headed by a single parent throughout childhood) do better than those living in unstable two - parent families (that is, families that had two parents present initially but then experienced a change in family structure).27 Another
study finds that children living in stable cohabiting homes (that is, families where two parents cohabit throughout the child's life) do just as well as children living with cohabiting parents who eventually marry.28 But other research challenges the conclusion that it is family stability that is crucial for child wellbeing One
study, for instance, found that children who experience two or more family transitions do not have worse
behavioral problems or cognitive test scores than children who experience only one or no family transitions.
Intensity of supervision and outcome for preschool aged children receiving
early and intensive
behavioral interventions: a preliminary
study
The current
study shows that the
Early Start program of home visitation has benefits in terms of reducing child abuse, increasing parental competence, and improving childhood
behavioral adjustment for up to 9 years, suggesting long - term benefits of home visitation.
Though the Parents as Teachers (PAT) and
Early Head Start (EHS) home visiting programs are less rigorously
studied, both programs have been positively linked to improved
behavioral outcomes in children, improved academic performance, child's emotional health, and a reduction in child maltreatment constructs, such as hospitalizations and injuries (Karoly et al., 2006; Krugman et al., 2007).
We further classified
studies into 1 of 3 categories: (1) University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) / Lovaas — based interventions and approaches that are often termed
early intensive
behavioral intervention (EIBI) in the literature; (2) comprehensive interventions for children younger than 2 years; and (3) parent - training protocols.
In humans, both the HPA system and the autonomic nervous system show developmental changes in infancy, with the HPA axis becoming organized between 2 and 6 months of age and the autonomic nervous system demonstrating relative stability by 6 to 12 months of age.63 The HPA axis in particular has been shown to be highly responsive to child - caregiver interactions, with sensitive caregiving programming the HPA axis to become an effective physiological regulator of stress and insensitive caregiving promoting hyperreactive or hyporeactive HPA systems.17 Several animal models as well as human
studies also support the connection between caregiver experiences in
early postnatal life and alterations of autonomic nervous system balance.63 - 65 Furthermore, children who have a history of sensitive caregiving are more likely to demonstrate optimal affective and
behavioral strategies for coping with stress.66, 67 Therefore, children with histories of supportive, sensitive caregiving in
early development may be better able to self - regulate their physiological, affective, and
behavioral responses to environmental stressors and, consequently, less likely to manifest disturbed HPA and autonomic reactivity that put them at risk for stress - related illnesses such as asthma.

earlier.
Thus, this
study adds to the small body of literature in children that demonstrates both biological and
behavioral outcomes from
early intervention with preschoolers at risk for psychiatric disorders.20, 48 Together these
studies underscore the plasticity of the HPA system in young children and suggest the potential for
early intervention across biological and
behavioral domains.
In the present
study, we have demonstrated that rat pups exposed to DPP - IV inhibitors with different mechanisms of action in the
early postnatal period might develop persistent
behavioral disorders.
Substance use disorders emerged in middle adolescence and increased in frequency through the middle 20s, becoming by far the most common psychiatric problems reported by the
study participants.26, 27 We have already shown that
early conduct problems predicted the onset of adolescent substance use disorders in this sample, 28,29 and it is not surprising that this is the aspect of
behavioral problems that showed the intervention effect in young adulthood.

Even when
study is limited to family processes as influences, multivariate risk models find support.9 - 12 For example, Cummings and Davies13 presented a framework for how multiple disruptions in child and family functioning and related contexts are supported as pertinent to associations between maternal depression and
early child adjustment, including problematic parenting, marital conflict, children's exposure to parental depression, and related difficulties in family processes.10, 11 A particular focus of this family process model is identifying and distinguishing specific response processes in the child (e.g., emotional insecurity; specific emotional, cognitive,
behavioral or physiological responses) that, over time, account for normal development or the development of psychopathology.10
