Earlier today I posted this picture of my son and I
breastfeeding uncovered in a
public restaurant.
One piece of advice I wish I had thought of
earlier - when needing to
breastfeed in
public, think of places that offer some kind of privacy to begin with - FITTING ROOMS!
I wrote
earlier this year about all my positive experiences of
public breastfeeding, in hundreds of places, out and about, and never having had a negative reaction.
The coalition works closely with the Chaffee County
Public Health and Environment,
Early Head Start, Nurse Family Partnership and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to reach populations which have historically had low
breastfeeding rates.
In part, that's because
early solids have been tied to obesity and other chronic conditions and because
public health experts agree it's best if mothers can
breastfeed exclusively for six months.
Clinical services and
public - health policies that promote exclusive
breastfeeding for the first six months of life are likely to yield important benefits for
early child development.
Hospital nurses,
public health units, lactation consultants and local doulas are other invaluable resources supporting moms in the
early days of
breastfeeding
As reported
earlier by us there have been many incidents where
breastfeeding mothers had to face prejudice for
public breastfeeding (check this and this).
The effects of
breastfeeding on children's development have important implications for both
public - health policies and for the design of targeted
early intervention strategies to improve the developmental outcomes of children at risk as a result of biological (e.g., prematurity) or social adversity (e.g., poverty).
Earlier this month, in connection with
Breastfeeding Awareness Month, Lee joined 50 other nursing moms, members of a group called the «Badass Breastfeeders of Atlanta,» for a «Big Latch On» event where they nursed together in
public and were joined by their families and other bystanders.
