Recently a number of major airlines have started to roll
out Basic
Economy fares.
You can get more than 2 cents of value
out your miles with an
economy - level Saver
fare.
A few weeks ago I speculated that a note that British Airways sent
out to travel industry professionals indicated that flyers would soon be able to mix Basic
Economy and regular
Economy fares (Plus
fares) in the same reservation.
Premium
economy and business class were sold
out, though later in March and in April,
fares dipped to $ 3,734 in premium
economy and $ 5,139 in business class round - trip.
This is figured
out by taking the milage: Base Miles (Round trip, SFO — DXB)-- 16,206 and multiplying it by 40 % (
Economy Class Skywards Flex
fare — 40 % of Miles flown) for a total of 6,483 Elevate points.

If American follows that path once it designates a separate Premium
Economy fare class, it's likely the cost those seats would work
out to be more than just $ 190 each way.

All three US legacy carriers now offer some form of Basic
Economy fares, American has only just backed away from the idea of introducing cabins with just 29 ″ of legroom, United got everyone excited with its Polaris Business Class product up until the point we realised that it will be a gazillion years before it's fully rolled
out and Delta has a long haul fleet that makes Mel Brooks look young.
I'd argue that this is a poor development for travelers, because many Basic
Economy fares for flights in the future are the same price as the lowest
fares out today, yet come with fewer benefits.
I've been on the look
out for good
fares since the beginning of August and, while American did post a somewhat tempting
Economy Class
fare from London back in September, the Business Class
fares out of Europe have come nowhere near what I'm prepared to pay....
Award Chart devaluations, Partner award chart devaluations, slashed mileage earnings, and a reduction in the number of SWUs handed
out have all been bitter pills to swallow in the past few weeks but, for me, losing the ability to upgrade into Business Class from an
Economy fare would probably be the final straw.
I've ruled
out a cheap American Airlines
Economy Class
fare from Europe as the economics make it a poor option... especially when you also add in the hassle that I would have with my checked bags.
Aside from a few short - haul
economy flights we paid for
out of pocket, the only costs we encountered were taxes and fees on our award tickets — all of which cost less than an
economy fare would have on any of the flights.
So, if we purchased the
Economy Class
fares using cash, we'd pay
out $ 2,150 for both of us (2 x $ 1,075) and then get an effective rebate of $ 607 (in the form of miles).
I'm thankful that hand baggage allowances haven't been cut and that my elite status will still see me keep a few benefits that are being stripped
out by the new transatlantic Basic
Economy fares but, overall, this is still a negative change (albeit one that was always going to come).
The other day I spotted what appeared to be a pretty reasonable Iberia Premium
Economy fare for travel between New York and Madrid and, as I really want to try
out the new product, I decided to see how many AAdvantage Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) I'd earn from the trip.
There may also be additional taxes and fees to pay (on top of those that are already included in your original
fare) if you're moving up from
Economy Class to a premium cabin — flights
out of the UK are a very good example of this.
If another great
fare came up and it involved flying on the Qatar Airways A330 I certainly wouldn't dismiss it
out of hand — it's still a lot better than sitting in any other airline's Premium
Economy or
Economy Class cabin — but I would make sure I had exhausted all my other options before I booked.
American Airlines appears to be aware of just how much confusion the introduction of a Basic
Economy fare can cause if it isn't explained thoroughly and in advance to a largely blissfully unaware public... so this is what they've had to say about the roll
out:
There is nothing passengers can do about a lot of these United Airlines Basic
Economy fare rules but there are some United Airlines co-branded cards that will help
out with things like the hand baggage allowance and the boarding order.
I can't say that I'd bother checking this route for
Economy Class seats if I wanted to fly to China (there are enough uncomfortable ways for me to do that straight
out of LA) but I'd definitely be interested in trying
out the Business Class product — I'll keep my eyes on
fares and see if anything interesting comes up.
As you probably know, all three legacy airlines have started rolling
out awful «basic
economy»
fares.
I didn't pay it much mind, because Virgin's fuel surcharges have historically made
economy redemptions utterly irrational — you spend miles but still come
out of pocket the bulk of a paid
fare.
That status will get me 25 % tier bonus Etihad Guest miles on eligible flights; an excess baggage allowance of 10 kilograms; access to the Al Reem Lounge at Abu Dhabi International Airport (even when flying coach), as well as business - class lounges at other airports in the network where offered; and a guaranteed
economy - class seat on a sold -
out Etihad flight, provided the booking is made in an eligible
fare class and requested at least 48 hours prior to scheduled departure.
Although the seats are
out there, they're not yet officially on sale as premium
economy fares.
Now that the Big Three U.S. airlines have rolled
out bare - bones Basic
Economy fares in their domestic networks, they're starting to take aim at international markets.
United Airlines is the latest major carrier to quietly roll
out new bundled
fare add - ons that will give customers extra amenities with the purchase of an
Economy Plus extra-legroom seat, offering them a discount compared with purchasing everything separately.

However, if you're booking over a month
out, Premium
Economy is several hundred dollars (~ $ 600 +) more expensive than the
Economy Saver
fare.
United's updated international business class, Polaris, will begin rolling
out in December, and the company is exploring premium
economy seating as well, in a bid to catch up with American Airlines current and Delta's upcoming premium
economy fares.
Do some research into what industries are
faring well in your market despite the
economy, and seek
out companies in those sectors to fill vacancies.
