As a member of the Education & Workforce committee, I strongly oppose recent efforts to reduce federal funding in these areas, and I am the author of H.R. 258, the STEM Master Teacher Corps Act, which would award competitive grants to school districts or states to partner with colleges and universities or nonprofit organizations to establish a program which will develop, support and retain exceptional teachers in the STEM disciplines.

Ray Uhalde of the National Center on Education and the Economy said a reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act, which funds the work of these boards, is hung up in the current session of Congress.

I supported the America COMPETES Act, a bill signed into law last year that increased funding for STEM education.

The Morrill Act, which in 1862 created the mechanism that has funded many of the nation's great public universities, called for institutions that would «promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.»
