My first contact with prison abolitionists was at a two - day «Alternatives to Prison»
seminar where the leadership was provided by Fay Honey Knopp and Jane Kathryn Vella of the Prison
Research Education Action Project (PREAP).
The following fall, I repeated the
seminar at Yale Divinity School, and for this I wrote a paper on «Linguistic Models and Christian
Education,» which I later read at the Professors and
Research Section of the National Council of Churches and published in Religious
Education for July - August 1966.
It has been nurtured in many ways: by
research into basic issues in theological
education underwritten by competitive grants offered by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.; by the work of some theological educators commissioned by the Endowment to think about these questions; and by a series of
seminars and conferences convened by the ATS to discuss some of the results of this
research and reflection.
Depending on the institution, these include online case studies, podcasts and webcasts of
seminars, and continuing medical
education courses on topics such as statistical methods, or engaging the community in
research.
