«A Kid Like Jake» Review: Silas Howard Directs a Simple but
Effective Drama About Raising a Non-Binary Child — Sundance 2018
The Revenant, his latest cinematic creation, is a brutally
effective drama about the power of the human spirit that was filmed in some of nature's harshest conditions.
Some of the most
effective dramas about heads of state (for instance, The Queen or Becket) are displaced romances where the combative relationship between ruler and adviser mimics that of soul mates.

The five - minute
drama that winsomely introduces the theme of the day is being increasingly utilized by churches concerned
about effective communication.
One quibble I have with the film is that it occasionally gets confused whether it wants to be a serious
drama or a comedy - but that's just a minor complaint to be made
about an otherwise tremendously
effective film.
GOOD KILL is a war -
drama about a family man (Ethan Hawke) who questions whether using drones is an
effective way of fighting combat.
And it's a shame that misgivings
about its final scenes threaten to overwhelm what is otherwise an undeniably satisfying and suspenseful chamber
drama bolstered by punishingly
effective sound design, an often menacing score from Bear McCreary and excellent leading turns from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman.
But now you can catch Greenwood in GOOD KILL, a war -
drama about a family man (Ethan Hawke) who questions whether using drones is an
effective way of fighting combat.
Out of the competition, the international highlights were El Clan (The Clan, Pablo Trapero), an
effective if derivative Argentinian political
drama / gangster film heavily influenced by Scorsese's Goodfellas; L'avenir (Things to Come, Mia Hansen - Løve), a fine if rather low - key
drama helped enormously by Isabelle Huppert's lead performance; and, best of all, Robert Greene's Kate Plays Christine, a truly disturbing mixture of fiction and documentary concerning the attempt to make a movie
about the tragic suicide of Florida journalist Christine Chubbuck, who shot herself on live television back in 1974.
With a combination of journalistic
drama and well - merited concern
about our current educational outcomes, Green sets out a compelling argument that
effective pedagogy embodies a highly complex set of skills and knowledge that can and should be taught to teachers.
