education field, I've taught in K - 12 and adult
learning settings, in both public and private schools, teaching literacy,
English Literature, and ESL.
The push for bilingualism often comes from

Occasionally, even ESL pullout programs, where students spend most of the day
learning in
English in a mainstream classroom, are mistakenly characterized as bilingual
education when the children in the ESL pullout class are of the same ethnicity.

English and the Mandarin is only a small part of their instruction.
Over the years, Americans haven't considered foreign - language
education a priority because it seemed like everyone else
learned English, the world's most widely spoken language.
