Sterilization of animals decreases not only the
number of homeless and feral animals born each year, but it also decreases unwanted behaviors in animals,
including roaming and aggression, which often lead to the surrender and
euthanasia of animals.
I do not
include lost / died in shelter care or owner - requested
euthanasia in calculating the live release rate, but instead will note separately if those
numbers appear unusually high.
Euthanasia is selected for many reasons,
including the large
number of pregnant cats in the spring, the difficulties of fostering a feral mother cat while her kittens are being raised, and the poor chances of recapturing feral kittens if the pregnant mother is released.
And, in the long term, access to more complete information concerning the broadest
number of a community's animals can inform other strategies —
including those related to spay / neuter, housing policies, safety - net and intervention programs — that may also make
euthanasia less likely.
It is obvious failings like this, where the city went from consistently declining impound and
euthanasia numbers prior to the ordinance taking effect and immediately began seeing inclines in both categories that have virtuatlly all animal welfare organizations speaking out against mandatory spay / neuter laws —
including the AVMA, ASPCA, Best Friends, American Humane, Ally Cat Allies and the No Kill Advocacy Center.
