The February decision by the Ethiopian
Evangelical Church Makane Yesus (EECMY) to terminate its 150 - year partnership with the
Church of Sweden (CoS) and its 50 - year partnership with the
Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) comes after the EECMY
tried — and failed — to persuade the other two bodies to reverse recent decisions to ordain gay clergy and bless same - sex unions.
Instead, with help from CT's managing editor, Katelyn Beaty, and my friends Helen Lee and Anna Broadway, I decided to
try to begin a conversation here on this blog about race and the
evangelical church.
Oh, also, just to add, even though the LDS
church has worked hard to legitimize itself in the eyes of many americans, the
evangelical christian fundamentalists consider the LDS teaching such a grave perversion of the christian faith (holy trinity issue, extra bible (Book of Mormon), etc.) that it drives them absolutely nuts whenever Mormons
try to pass themselves as «christians.»
Several projects are under way to
try to involve
evangelical churches in the movement, but so far these efforts have not been very successful.
While the
Evangelicals» concern for the social problems of their day was mainly practical and philanthropic,
trying to effect change through Acts of Parliament and by giving relief to those in need, the response of the
Church of England's High
Church party, known as the Tractarians or Oxford Movement, was more theological.
I don't know about you, but most of my
evangelical experience has included the teaching that God will ultimately destroy the world and that anyone who thinks the purpose of the
Church is to
try and fix it is naïve.
The problem is that there are so many organized tax exempt
evangelical churches who will get 100 % of their vote out while the rest of the rational masses are just individuals
trying to get through the day and do not vote as an organized block.
Presently, Episcopal
Church leadership seems to be responding to this question by
trying to incorporate elements of fundamentalism and
evangelical expression, and to embrace charismatics and fundamentalists who have never had currency in Anglicanism [The Christian Century.
As a professor at Trinity
Evangelical Divinity School, McKnight
tried to avoid entering debates about women in
church ministry.
The «ex-gay» approach was the topic of our second discussion around Torn, and as I said there, I think this may be the most difficult reality for the
Church, and
evangelicals in particular, to accept — that we have to move beyond the default setting of
trying to change people's sexual orientation upon learning they are gay.
So the Mormon
Church is a cult one day and not a cult today because you want to Christians to vote for Romney... I love Rev Graham but this is a terrible move on his organization's part... I have been critical of so call «Rev» on the Democratic side and now I'm disappointed with the so called
Evangelical Christians on the Republican side... God is not political and we shouldn't
try to manipulate people using His name... on either side of the aisle...
