Can the discussion
on women, for example, provide the
evangelical church a test case in theological construction?
On the issue of
women,
evangelical theologians must give more attention to hermeneutical concerns.
At the other end of the
evangelical spectrum, we have noted some who are considering portions of the Bible to be erroneous, given the conflict of traditional interpretations
on the one hand, and contemporary judgments concerning
women on the other.
On the other hand, ordained
women in ACNA and in other
evangelical churches may well decide that their own vocations are better pursued back within Church of England - related Anglican churches, and one may see a strengthening of conservative female leadership there.
David Hubbard, for example, in his taped remarks
on the future of evangelicalism to a colloquium at Conservative Baptist Theological Seminary in Denver in 1977 noted the following areas of tension among
evangelicals:
women's ordination, the charismatic movement, ecumenical relations, social ethics, strategies of evangelism, Biblical criticism, Biblical infallibility, contextual theology in non-Western cultures, and the churchly applications of the behavioral sciences.2 If such a list is more exhaustive than those topics which this book has pursued, it nevertheless makes it clear that the foci of the preceding chapters have at least been representative.
Thus, the
women's liberation movement in America has been compelling enough to some
evangelicals to cause them to jettison, or at least radically qualify, Pauline authority
on the subject.
Whether through an arbitrary selectivity concerning which texts are treated, or through a selectivity regarding which aspects of a text are thought relevant, or through a selectivity according to the literary genre and method of presentation,
evangelicals on both sides of the controversy concerning
woman's rightful role have too often truncated the Scriptural message.

But contemporary
evangelicals also seem to be a house divided
on other theological issues they address - consider their discussion
on the role of
women, their definitions of social ethics, and their responses to homosexuality.
Evangelicals, all claiming a common Biblical norm, are reaching contradictory theological formulations
on many of the major issues they address — the nature of Biblical inspiration, the place of
women in the church and family, the church's role in social ethics, and most recently the Christian's response to homosexuality.
Spelled out in a lengthy lead editorial entitled «
Evangelicals in the Social Struggle,» as well as in books such as Aspects of Christian Social Ethics, Henry's understanding of Christian social responsibility stressed (a) society's need for the spiritual regeneration of all men and
women, (b) an interim social program of humanitarian care, ethical proclamation, and personal, structural application, and (c) a theory of limited government centering
on certain «freedom rights,» e. g., the rights to public property, free speech, and so
on.18 Though the shape of this social ethic thus closely parallels that of the present editorial position of Moody Monthly, it must be distinguished from its counterpart by the time period involved (it pushed others like Moody Monthly into a more active involvement in the social arena), by the intensity of its commitment to social responsibility, by the sophistication of its insight into political theory and practice, and by its willingness to offer structural critique
on the American political system.

on the issue3 Daughters of Sarah has come into being to provide for
evangelical women who believe Christianity and feminism are inseparable4
Stirred by the steady stream of feminist literature which has caused a revolution in Western society, and prodded by the more liberal wing of the church which opened up the discussion
on the ordination of
women twenty or more years ago, contemporary
evangelicals have become increasingly interested in reevaluating the role of
women.
If I were a betting
woman, I would put money
on the guess that in less than ten years,
evangelicals will be blushing at some of James Dobson's comments regarding homosexuality.
Back in 2008 I wrote a post called «A Funny Thing Happened
On The Way To The Polls» to address how surprised I was at the way Conservative
Evangelical Christians were embracing the idea of a
woman for Vice President while at the same time standing against
women being ordained as pastors.
Although many readers will be put off by her
evangelical jargon — and I admit to some bewilderment at it — I found her language reassuring in its emphasis
on the family as something more than the nemesis of self - actualized
women.
Despite the fact that the debate over female ordination will continue, it seems that
evangelicals on different sides of that debate could come together about the role of
women in para-church organizations.

evangelicals, some speculated that Trump's shaky background
on pro-life issues, awkward articulation of his personal faith, and reputation around
women would turn away conservative Christians.
