Following the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the PED launched NMRISING, a statewide initiative to inform the development of New Mexico's state plan7
and build upon the momentum of recent student success.8 The plan reinforces the PED's commitment to robust CCR standards
and assessments, meaningful
school accountability, a commitment to ensure that all students are served by
excellent educators,
and dynamic strategies for turning around the state's struggling
schools.
The new initiative, called «
Excellent Educators for All,» aims to bring states into compliance with a teacher equity mandate in the No Child Left Behind Act, the George W. Bush - era law that requires states to reward
and punish
schools based on standardized test scores.
Any Finnish
educator will say that Finland improved its public education system not by privatizing its
schools or constantly testing its students, but by investing in the preparation, support,
and retention of
excellent teachers.
The key is making sure that
schools and educators have the tools to provide students with the kind of education they need to clear the bar, including resources, the ability to build teams of
excellent educators,
and enough flexibility at the
school level to adjust the length of the
school day
and year (among other things).

schools.27 Unfortunately, few
educators currently receive these kinds of opportunities for professional learning
and growth.28 For example, well - developed, sustained professional learning communities, or PLCs, can serve as powerful levers to improve teaching practice
and increase student achievement.29 When implemented poorly, however, PLCs result in little to no positive change in
school performance.30

educator quality at the center of national
school improvement efforts remains as relevant today as it was 20 years ago when a national commission described recruiting, preparing,

At the heart of their recommendations, compiled in two separate policy papers, are the following strategies: empowering principals
and educators with more autonomy over staffing; leadership
and coaching opportunities for
excellent teachers; student - focused professional development designed at the
school site; direct investment in community engagement;
and financial incentives to attract
and keep teachers making progress with their students (based on a multi-measured evaluation system) in hard - to - staff
schools.

I realize now that part of the reason that I never felt pressed to attend, was because I had been privileged to work in
school communities (mostly) that believed in me as a Black male
educator, that were full of Black men choosing to show up
excellent for the students that we served,
and that supported my growth.
These courses are an ideal mechanism for
schools, districts, states,
and nations to build their technology - related leadership capacity
and are an
excellent resource for superintendents, principals, district technology coordinators, media specialists, teachers,
and other
educators interested in the leadership aspects of K - 12 technology.
