Contrasting the breathtaking vistas of the Jersey
exteriors with the conservative confines of Moll's home - life interiors (the latter were
shot in Surrey), Pearce and cinematographer Benjamin Kračun conjure an archetypal
landscape in which disparate worlds collide.
Cinematographer Guy Godfree makes the subdued
landscape of the Canadian province come alive in
exterior shots that balance out the meticulous work he does inside the tiny little house where the Lewis couple reside.
In almost all Westerns, the
landscape is the dominant visual: lots of daylight
exterior shots, big skies, seemingly wild and uninhabited land, sweepingly wide - open spaces.
Featuring interior
shots of vacated homes, as well as
exterior photographs of the buildings and desolate
landscapes, there is a haunted quality to this work in which Hernandez deliberately blurs the line between absence and presence, the visible and invisible.
