The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed a total of 16
films that will be competing in this year's
Best Animated
Feature category for the 88th Academy Award.
With 10
best picture nominations to choose from, there could be a twist: Perhaps the blockbuster «Toy Story 3» (also nominated in the animated
feature film category) or the Coen brothers» revisionist Western, «True Grit,» could sneak in and snatch the big prize.
The
feature films nominated for
Best Film this year are «Frank» which gives an insight into the weird and wonderful world of the enigmatic musician; the gritty urban family drama of «Glassland»; the raw, moving and honest «I Used to Live Here»; the feel
good true - life story of «Noble»; the poignant and sensitive exploration of mental health in «Patrick's Day», and the beautiful Irish animated fantasy «Song of the Sea»; Three of the
Best Films also get nominations for
Best Director; Lenny Abrahamson for «Frank»; Gerard Barrett «Glassland» and Terry McMahon for «Patrick's Day», with John Carney also in that
category for the musical drama «Begin Again».
Another speculative - fiction
feature, «Gravity,» won in two
categories: Alfonso Cuaron received
Best Director, and Emmanuel Lubezki's work earned the
film Best Cinematography.
The Annie Awards nominations come out tomorrow and hopefully they will help clarify which
films are dominating in the
Best Animated
Feature category this year.
Those
films feature pushes in other
categories, which could spell
good luck for Ronan here.
Eight
films featured in the
Best Picture
category: The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight.
The 18th Costume Designers Guild awards, hosted by Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad, Masters of Sex) were handed out last night in
feature film, television and commercial
categories and Mad Max: Fury Road, The Danish Girl and Beasts of No Nation
bested their competition in their
categories.
It was one of a record 27 animated
films that competed for the five slots in the
Best Animated
Feature category.

feature debut for French filmmaker Xavier Legrand (an Oscar nominee in the short
film category), who duly won the Venice jury's Silver Lion for
best director, and who stands a shot at winning another prize in Toronto's Platform competition.
The
film, which has earned $ 10 million at the box office thus far, is also up for several Independent Spirit Awards, though Gerwig was surprisingly snubbed in the
best - director
category; Lady Bird is the multi-hyphenate's
feature directorial debut.
The caustic, darkly comic ballbuster Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri walked away from the Globes with trophies in four of the six
categories it was nominated in, and the most awards of any
feature film of the night: The movie took the
Best Motion Picture — Drama) prize, stars Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand both took home acting awards in their
categories, and director Martin McDonagh won for his screenplay.
Other winners in the

This year, the
best narrative
feature category sees 12
films battling it out for the prestigious prize, while 12 documentaries from around the word will compete to be named
best documentary
feature.
Why: If you think of the writing
categories as the ones where Academy voters give consolation prizes to
films they like but don't want for
Best Picture, then expect to see Jordan Peele on stage early in the evening, picking up the hardware for his
feature debut as writer / director.
Canadian nominees include Christopher Plummer for
best supporting actor, who filled in at the last minute when Kevin Spacey was ousted from Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World following sexual misconduct allegations; Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 received nominations in many technical
categories, including cinematography, effects and sound; and the animated
film The Breadwinner, a Canadian co-production based on the novel by Deborah Ellis, is up for
best animated
feature.
Cars 2 will almost certainly become the first Pixar
film to not receive an Academy Award nomination for
Best Animated
Feature since the
category was established in 2001.
The is the second year to
feature a
film about Samuel Fuller in the
Best Documentary
category, after 2013's A Fuller Life.
Lion is a beautiful
film full of magic and wonder, but it will not be winning
Best Director in the
feature category.

As should be clear to you by now, this is a
film that ought to
feature on Oscar night
well beyond the acting
categories, for its editing, cinematography, writing, direction, and even that rarely consequential subject hair and makeup all warrant notice.
The 16th Annual Tribeca Film Festival announced the top winners in all five
feature categories were presented to women - directed
films, including Keep the Change (
Best U.S. Narrative) Son of Sofia (
Best International Narrative) and Bobbi Jene (
Best Documentary).

category, but the recent dustup over its (absurd) designation as an Adapted Screenplay that was, in fact, adapted from... itself (essentially, the
feature script was written, then Chazelle adapted it into a short to sell the
film, but since the short came out first, it's considered adapted from the short, even though the short was technically adapted from the unshot script.

film given a qualifying American theatrical engagement can compete in any Oscar
