Adding a low
FODMAP diet into this mix can leave you feeling stressed about what you can and can't afford to eat.

Mike was on it for about six months before he was able to start reintroducing high
FODMAP foods back
into his
diet.
Whilst it's great to see awareness building around
FODMAPs in the
diet, consumers need to be able to put their dietary guidelines
into practice.
But the fact of the matter is that after two months, you should start reincorporating higher -
FODMAP foods
into your
diet.
BUT... the only legumes that Monash U has shown to fit
into the low
FODMAP diet is 1/4 cup CANNED chickpeas and 1/2 cup canned lentils.
Not everyone is sensitive to garlic (I am not) so perhaps the brine can come back
into the mix after the initial phase of the low
FODMAP diet.
Not sure how it fits
into the low
FODMAP diet though from what I have read it does not seem to be a big source of fructose.
My major caution is that the low
FODMAP diet lowers bifida bacteria populations which are linked with decreasing colon cancer risk — so the
diet should be used short term — with the goal to try to get some of the fructans / GOS foods that increase these healthy gut bacteria population back
into the
diet.
This is because almonds contain both fructans and GOS — they are allowed on the low
FODMAP diet in a 10 almond limit... BUT when you make almond milk you add LOTS of almonds — then add water — and the fructans and GOS (which are water - soluble) can leach from the almonds right
into the milk... then
into your intestine.....
The next phase is the re-introduction phase in which you systematically introduce each of the
FODMAP types, one by one, back
into your
diet to find out your level of tolerance for each specific type.
I think challenges should be done very gently with the goal to try to incorporate as much
FODMAPs back
into the
diet as possible... even if in trace amounts!
So I think I'll stay on my low - key low -
FODMAP diet for now (as it seems to have a very benificial effect on my everyday digestion), and strike out
into «bad eating» - land when I feel ok to risk it.
I like a gentle challenge approach — where small amounts of
FODMAPs are reintroduced
into the
diet while you stay on the low
FODMAP diet in a systematic manner.
From my experience working with many clients, most are able to tolerate some
FODMAPs back
into the
diet.
