Famicom peripherals and more join this week's smattering of retro Nintendo classic consoles.
In 1994, Nintendo released the
game in
cartridge format for the first time in Japan, towards the end of the
Famicom's lifetime.
Originally, this
game was planned to have a «create your own dungeon» system, inspired by the
Famicom Disk System's ability to rewrite data and contain more than a simple NES
cartridge.
You can play all your favorite NES, SNES, Super
Famicom, Genesis, Mega Drive,
Famicom,
Game Boy,
Game Boy Color, and GBA
cartridges.
In addition to the basic collectibles, many stages contain bonus keys, chests and even
Famicom cartridges which will warp CommanderVideo into a series of 8 - bit renderings of the
game.
Not only can the Super Nt play all 721
games in the Super Nintendo's library, but it's also fully compatible with Japanese Super
Famicom cartridges.
Both
games saw
Famicom cartridge releases, without the enhanced sound, long after the US
cartridge releases.
This Japan - only release contained a special memory mapper chip (the VRC7) that enabled the
cartridge to produce FM synthesis, giving it a quality that no other
Famicom / NES
game can compete with.
Whereas Square - Enix had to use its imagination to stuff the epic Final Fantasy VI into a Super
Famicom cartridge (and translator / localizer Ted Woolsey had to perform even more magic tricks to make sure all the
game's translated text fit — while working inside [and around] Nintendo of America's Big List of No - No Content), the PlayStation's CD format offered Final Fantasy VII's developers a creative space that could house the entirety of their imaginations.
The
game required a special compression chip in its
cartridge to compress and store all of the
game's data due to possessing graphics that pushed the limits of the aging Super
Famicom.
There are five
cartridge slots: NES, SNES (Super
Famicom), Genesis (Mega Drive),
Famicom and Gameboy / Gameboy Color / GBA, that allow you to play original
game carts on an HDTV via HDMI.
Tales of Phantasia is notable in many ways, it was the first
Famicom (SNES)
game to use a 48 MB
cartridge (a special new
cartridge with larger Memory capacity) because Tales of Phantasia required a greater hardware capacity to run.
Positioned as a rival to the Hyperkin Retron 5, the Retro Freak is a similar proposition — it has multiple
cartridge slots so it can accept
games for different systems, such as the Mega Drive,
Famicom,
Game Boy, PC Engine and — of course — SNES.
What really makes the Retron 5 special is the fact that it's not limited to just the SNES — it also has Mega Drive,
Game Boy,
Game Boy Color,
Game Boy Advance, NES and
Famicom cartridge slots, so you can play an entire generation of gaming history on a single machine.
