While the card's 1 % cash back awards on most spending is definitely less than you would earn with flat rate cash back cards like the Capital One ® Quicksilver ® Cash Rewards Credit Card or
Fidelity Investment Rewards, it really doesn't take much spending in the bonus categories to come out ahead overall.
On the other hand, if your spending is irregular, or you just eat out more and take public transportation more, than
the Fidelity Investment Rewards Amex is the better choice.
The Fidelity Investment Rewards card lets you earn the highest flat cash back rate of 2 % on all net spending, which can raise your overall level of cash rewards earned.
But I have also argued strongly for a long time that the benchmark of value — what you need to compare all of your spend to in terms of rate of return — is
the Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express.
The honorable mention this week goes out to
the Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express Card.
Compare that to spending $ 20,000 on a card with 2 % cash back rewards, or the equivalent (e.g.
Fidelity Investment Rewards Amex, Citi Double Cash, Barclaycard Arrival Plus, Capital One Venture Rewards):
The Citi Double Cash card and
the Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express card give cash back at that rate, and neither has an annual fee.
The Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express has long been popular in the travel hacking community.
And finally, I wanted to grab
a Fidelity Investment Rewards card while it's got a $ 50 signup bonus and before it potentially gets turned into a Visa or Mastercard in the near future.
If you're only going to redeem for a fixed value of 1 cent per point — or even 1.25 cents per point — you might as well skip having a premium credit card and instead use a card like Barclays Arrival Plus World Elite card or
the Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express, since either of those cards will give you 2 cents per dollar spent on everything.
Neither
the Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express or Citi Double Cash has an annual fee.
Actually, not really, especially when you consider that
a Fidelity Investment Rewards AmEx Card earns 2 % cash back on every dollar spent.
As an aside, Capital One also offers a separate 1.5 % cash back card, but I'd choose the 2 %
Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express card or perhaps the new 1 % +1 % Citi Double Cash card over Capital One's offering since they both offer a higher cash back return on all purchases.
For readers who might not have heard of the 2 % theory, here's the idea: since we can get 2 % cash back on all our credit card spend by using a card such as
the Fidelity Investment Rewards Amex or the Citi Double Cash card, we should consider that the minimum reward rate.
Now, that's nearly identical to the 2 % cash back cards out there, such as the Citi Double Cash or
the Fidelity Investment Rewards Visa.
Neither the Citi Double Cash nor
the Fidelity Investment Rewards Visa carry an annual fee of any sort, so the $ 89 fee on the Arrival + is a pretty big hit in comparison.
For those of you unfamiliar with it, today we'll be discussing this card:
The Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express.
