fight cancer, kill bacteria, and even serve as potent painkillers — though many have only gone as far as
animal tests.
When they inject white blood cells from any of these anticancer mice into their nonresistant brethren, the injected
animals become resistant as well,

While these levels remain unfortunately low,
animal studies provide us with some clues as to how to increase the sulforaphane yield of these bacteria — feed them more.66 In just four days of a high broccoli diet, those bacteria that thrive on cruciferous vegetables grow in number, leading to a change in composition of the microbial community and an increase in opportunistic bacteria that turn our broccoli into
cancer -
fighting sulforaphane.
A colleague informed him of a startling trend: liver
cancer was plaguing affluent Filipinos at a much higher rate than their less - wealthy counterparts — a phenomenon that, despite a slew of other lifestyle differences, Campbell believed was linked to their higher intake of
animal protein.1 Bolstering his suspicions, Campbell also learned of a recent study from India showing that a high protein intake spurred liver
cancer in rats, while a low protein intake seemed to prevent it.2 Intrigued by this gem of little - known research, Campbell decided to investigate the role of nutrition in
cancer growth himself — an endeavor that ended up lasting several decades and producing over one hundred publications (none of which pertained to
Fight Club).3
It is prescribed for edema in Germany and may be safer than other remedies because it replenishes potassium.910 Preliminary
animal studies suggest that dandelion may help normalize blood sugar and
fight inflammation.11 Dandelion root extract caused
cancer cells to destroy themselves in a Canadian lab study, which prompted a clinical study (the results of which are not yet available).12
Research in
animals suggests that NSAIDs might be more helpful
fighting certain types of breast
cancer than others — which could explain why past studies in women with breast
cancer have had mixed results.
