Scenes tend to linger for longer than they should at times, while
others are strung together in rapid succession; journeying through Spike Lee's late - 90s sports drama is a little like flipping through the pages of a photo
album — you tend to gloss over several photos and pages and stay on
others, and that's precisely how the
film is paced.
It's such a wonderful score, and it's so good to be able to hear all of it for the first time away from the
film - but on the
other hand, the original
album was exceptionally well - sequenced, balancing the action / adventure and romantic sections beautifully with each
other.
The ambient electronic material is chilled - out and evocative, but while this composer is perfectly adept at applying that style of scoring to a
film (it usually works very well in context), it's very hard to imagine there are too many people who would like it on
album as much as similar styles from
other composers who are possibly more at home working that way.
I'm Not There is a chronicle of the many faces of ace provocateur / de facto post-bellum American Poet Laureate Bob Dylan that recreates
album covers with the same facility as it does eras,
film stocks, genre patterns, and
other stylistic imitations.
The
film focuses on a handful of the city's musicians, including Micha Biton, whose music is heavily influenced by Moroccan sounds; singer Hagit Yaso, whose parents emigrated from Ethiopia and who sings in Hebrew, English and Arabic, among

The original MCA LP was a re-recording of select cues (typical for the band, much like Firestarter or Flashpoint), and Varese Sarabande reissued the
album on CD a few years later, but TD's original score recording's never appeared anywhere save on fan edit and bootleg
albums (mostly as a pastiche of unreleased cues among
other film & non-
film bits & pieces).
But while the score might be sometimes be grating in the
film, it's easily more beautifully listenable than Greenwood's
other albums.
