Albeit a pedestrian endeavor, with a retread script and standard direction, it must be said that Shanghai Noon definitely delivers on
entertainment, as the two stars carry the
film with their
own special blend of quirky charm that breathes life into tired lungs.
Although not quite as sharp and clever as the aforementioned Heckerling vehicle, Clueless, I Could Never Be Your Woman (its rather odd choice for a title is derived from a lyric to the 1997 White Town song, «Your Woman», covered by Tyler James in 2005, the same year this was
filmed), is actually quite inventive in its
own fashion, with Heckerling drawing upon her
own experience in being an older woman working in a youth - oriented industry, making
entertainment meant to appeal to people about 30 years her junior.
Though technically just the bridge between the lower - budget original and the two - part finale still to come, in director Francis Lawrence's steady hands (gone are the previous
film's needlessly spastic camera moves), «Catching Fire» makes for rousing
entertainment in its
own right, leaving fans riled and ready to storm the castle.
Nineteen
films over 10 years — and while not all of them have been great and a few have even been not that good, as a whole they have maintained a general sense of consistent quality and
entertainment value that is impressive in its
own right.
The opening credit «A Todd Phillips Movie» — as opposed to «
film» — accurately signals that the filmmaker is aiming for
entertainment, not art, but he and co-writer Craig Mazin fail to overleap their
