And yet, for all its non-stop joking and jockeying, The Final Girls displays a willingness to experiment, running rampant with the absurdly witty violence, kinetic energy, and almost nihilist intemperance, like that you'd find in similarly satirical works like Deathgasm, Cabin in the Woods and The Editor.

The Final Girls made a point of stating how The Entity was deemed misogynistic upon its release, and asked the audience to reconsider this as we watched.

With all that being said, The Final Girls was an absolutely blast to watch.

Camp is the name of the game in «The Final Girls,» a film that requires considerable suspension of disbelief in an audience who will probably show up in the theater ready to hoot and holler and show how much they know about just about every slasher picture that has received studio OK's.

All in all, I really dug The Final Girls.

This year The Final Girls was my most anticipated film of SXSW 2015.

I think without that storyline, The Final Girls would still have been a lot of fun, but I don't think it wouldn't have been nearly as good of a film.

WHY: There's been a surge of meta horror films released over the last few years, but while Todd Strauss - Schulson's «The Final Girls» boasts a really clever premise and a solid cast, it doesn't succeed on the same level as other recent entries like «The Cabin in the Woods» and «You're Next.»

Diehard horror fans will still find plenty to love about «The Final Girls» in spite of these flaws, but it's definitely not as good as it could have been.

Jokes aside, «Final Girls» makes a sincere attempt to explore the role of fantasy in understanding love - a «Purple Rose of Psycho,» if you will.

This weekend brings a wonderful meshing of horror and comedy with some real heart in the form of The Final Girls.

But «Final Girls» is quite serious about the relationship between Max and her mother, which takes place in a twilight mingling of preposterous situations and actual feeling.
