Flash forward to October 18 of this year, to what I thought would be enlightenment, in the form of a front - page
story in the New York Times, ««Culture of Poverty,» Long an Academic Slur,
Makes a Comeback ``
If a
story runs — even if it can only cough its way like an ill - used jalopy, to the corner of
Flash Fiction Avenue and Finished Street — then I as a coach and the whole workshop group gets to move onto
making it run better.
Speaking of hearts, there's one last reward of reviewing that I'd like to mention: that as an author myself, I know how heartwarming it is to receive an enthusiastic review for my own work, and the arrival of not one but two glowing reviews for my latest book, the collection of very short
stories (aka
flash fiction) has
made my week already — and it's still only Tuesday.
Though many writers have helped to shape the history of
flash fiction, Ernest Hemingway's first short -
story collection, In Our Time, easily
makes him one of the form's primary pioneers.
Another contemporary short - short
story that
made a successful leap from text to screen is Katharine Weber's «Sleeping» The
story was originally published in Vestal Review and later republished in James Thomas and Robert Shapard's
Flash Fiction Forward: 80 Very Short
Stories.
The question of what
makes the
story «matter» is perhaps best described as the «dramatic imperative,» defined in Randall Brown's A Pocket Guide to
Flash Fiction as «the reason for a
story's existence, the why of its being, of this moment's being chosen over all the others.»
At its best
flash fiction shouldn't stop time in a way that
makes you wish you were dead, which the joke and punch - line
story makes one feel; it stops time by providing a different kind of time altogether.
What
makes flash fiction different to the others is the point at which you enter and leave the
story.
While I agree with Kristen that blogging
makes us write «leaner, meaner, faster, and cleaner», so does short
story writing, so does
flash fiction writing, and so does a few rounds with an experienced editor over your novel.
(i.e.
Making a short
story into a
flash fiction may
make it more concise and dramatic or it may leave it feeling more like an outline.
I love hearing these kinds of
stories, and I think Hugh's been doing some really great things this year, like give away free copies of Wool to fans on a a specially
made flash drive.
I was also given the suggestion of posting
flash fiction or short
stories on an author blog, which also
makes sense to me, since giving readers a taster of my writing style to draw them to buying my books
makes total sense to me.

make up the outline of a more complete
story?
In
flash fiction that one scene may actually be your entire
story (and note that a single scene does NOT a
flash make unless it has some larger significance or resonance beyond the confines of that scene).

I usually try to write at least a peice of
flash fiction every day in my notebook during lunch, and then I can decide if the
story has legs to be
made into something larger.
I've traditionally had some trouble completing short
stories as well, so some ways to
make a good ending and give it some oomph would be nice, but I've gotten better at that since working on the
flash fiction course, so it's less of an immediate concern for me now.
Promised are «a deep, original
story» with characters such as Batman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Superman, The
Flash, Wonder Woman «and many others»
making appearances.

make me want to put on a rabbit mask, grab an uzi and wade into the next issue.
