The eddy correlation (ECOR)
flux measurement system provides half - hour measurements of the surface turbulent fluxes of momentum, sensible heat, latent heat, and carbon dioxide.

Ocean heat
flux is a turbulent and complex
system [7] which utilizes atmospheric
measurement techniques such as eddy covariance to measure the rate of heat transfer expressed in the unit of joules or watts per second.
Dessler (2011) used observational data (such as surface temperature
measurements and ARGO ocean temperature) to estimate and corroborate these values, and found that the heating of the climate
system through ocean heat transport was 20 times larger than TOA energy
flux changes due to cloud cover over the period in question.
Whereas previous synthesis efforts have lacked
measurements from temperate and subtropical
systems, our data set addresses this gap by including a number of recent GHG
flux estimates from US, European, Australian, and Asian temperate and subtropical reservoirs (figure 2, table 2).
ΔCRF is the change in TOA net
flux anomaly if clouds were instantaneously removed, with everything else held fixed, and it is determined by subtracting ΔRall - sky, obtained from CERES
measurements, from the clear - sky
flux anomalies ΔRclear - sky, obtained from a reanalysis
system.»
Although we did not explicitly address the temporal or spatial resolution of emission data from each
system, it is notable that the few published acoustic and eddy covariance - based reservoir CH4
flux estimates are quite high compared to the median CH4
flux estimates from less temporally and / or spatially integrated
measurement techniques (figure 1).
The majority of
measurements from old
systems and high latitude
systems have been diffusive only (supplemental figures S4 and S5), which may underestimate true CH4
fluxes.
Future study of boreal reservoir GHG
fluxes should target these underrepresented
systems and incorporate more comprehensive ebullition rate
measurements.
Therefore, a correction factor (× 0.2458) was applied, obtained from a series of simultaneous CO2
flux measurements from a floating chamber connected to an EGM - 4 (PP -
Systems) performed at the same time as surface gas concentrations were collected [4](data from 2007 to 2010, n = 57, r2 = 0.689, p < 0.001; unpubl.
Differences in variations in ocean heating rate and satellite net TOA
flux are well within the uncertainty of the
measurements and, therefore, cast doubt on the argument for «missing energy» in the climate
system.
Terrestrial
flux and boundary - layer
measurements represent a new, expanding and potentially hugely important resource for improving our understanding of these processes and their representation in models of the climate
system.
NASA cancelled its Carbon Monitoring
System (CMS), a $ 10 million - a-year program, which provides funding for research aimed at improving the
measurement of carbon stocks and
fluxes.
