She constructs each
of the two
pieces on display around supporting
steel posts bearing small, welded, regularly spaced rectangular
frames.
Some
of those I'd been most drawn to appeared reduced, hardened and flattened, a little too obvious: the 1973 expanse
of white Enamelac on an aluminium base that shows in a thin line down the left - hand side and along the bottom; a row
of square
pieces from the same year, their fat L - shapes
of black (oxidised copper, apparently) set off by smaller white baked - enamel squares; and 1985's Catalyst III, with its
steel bolts and thin, intermittent lines
of black enamel seeming to divide the aluminium base and contain it in a pointedly incomplete
frame.
Thomas Demand, using 270,000 individual
pieces of die - cut paper, meticulously constructed a handmade forest in a
steel frame approximately 50 feet long, 18 feet high, and 32 feet deep for his stunning Clearing (2003).

For «Case Work: Sculptures and Drawings by Allied Works Architecture» (opening at the Denver Art Museum on Jan. 24), the founder Brad Cloepfil decided to create a
piece of architecture: an open -
frame, walk - in
steel structure — a building within the gallery walls — with custom - designed walnut drawers and cases to hold the 17 study models that are the centerpiece
of the exhibition.
Instead
of joining the bamboo
frame pieces together with a bulky and rather unsightly mass
of material, Pedal Forward uses
steel «lugs» for the crucial joints (bottom bracket, seat post, head tube and front fork, and rear drop - outs), and then epoxies in «iron bamboo» tubes to build the
frame.
Being that the loft
framing was
steel, the catwalk railing had
steel elements, and we had trimmed out the doors on the first floor with
steel, this material seemed like the obvious choice to construct this final
piece of the puzzle.
It's not the prettiest
piece of furniture — just a
steel frame with a veneer top.
With a big display, a stainless
steel frame, and powerful guts inside, the Connected is the forefather to all the luxury wrist wearables that will inevitably follow it, and it's a wonderful
piece of wrist gear.
When you combine the designer look with the craftsmanship
of a solid
steel frame and oak top, you are not only buying an extra
piece of seating furniture but something that can decorate your home and build around your interior theme.
Lighter - feeling
pieces that had more negative space than heft helped achieve this: open glass shelving, a pair
of tubular
steel frame chairs, a simple wood coffee table with an X-shaped metal base, Lucite - and - metal seats in the dining area, and lots
of airy, crystal chandeliers.
