BUT, the Wii U doesn't have
the GameCube controller ports like the Wii does, so it wouldn't really matter anyway.
Hardcore Super Smash Bros players swear by the Gamecube controller (though the community is apparently happy enough with the Pro Controller), and since the Wii U doesn't have
Gamecube controller ports (because, I don't know, perhaps Nintendo thought they may have enough controller options already), we're getting a Gamecube controller adaptor and even a Smash Bros. themed controller.
They could have offered the ability to play with other controllers, since you had
GameCube controller ports.
Namco Bandai produced a mat controller, a simpler less sophisticated competitor to the balance board, that connects to
the GameCube controller port.

This allowed owners of the
GameCube to feel more comfortable about a transition to the Wii since they could still keep and play all of their favorite games — and it even had
ports for the
GameCube controller so that you could play those games and even some new ones with it.
Nintendo have released a picture on their official Twitter page, which shows the adapter connecting to the Wii U via a USB
port and four slots for the
Gamecube controllers to be plugged in.
All users have to do is attach the $ 20 - ish
GameCube controller adapter that was sold for Wii U into the Switch dock's two front USB
ports.
The Switch can detect
Gamecube controllers via the Wii U accessory when plugged into one of its USB
ports.
