These data include new aircraft observations from the northern permafrost region (e.g., the NASA Arctic - Boreal Vulnerability Experiment) and measurement of sea - air gas exchange (e.g., the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
Gas Hydrates Project).
But such gas hydrates normally occur at depths of at least 100 metres, says Carolyn Ruppel, a geophysicist in charge of
the gas hydrates project at the US Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The methane hydrates with the highest climate susceptibility are in upper continental margin slopes, like those that ring the Arctic Ocean, representing about 3.5 percent of the global methane hydrate inventory, says Carolyn Ruppel, a scientist who leads
the Gas Hydrates Project at the USGS.

«If the decomposition of the methane
hydrate phase is fast enough, which depends on temperature, the methane
gas in the aqueous phase forms nanobubbles,» said Saman Alavi, one of the lead researchers on the
project.
The new research
projects are intended to advance understanding of the nature and occurrence of deepwater and Arctic
gas hydrates and their implications for future resource development and environmental performance.
The selected
projects build on the completion of a successful test earlier this year that was able to safely extract a steady flow of natural
gas from methane
hydrates on the North Slope of Alaska.
The
project at the University of Texas at Austin will develop conceptual and numerical models to analyze conditions under which
gas will be expelled from existing marine accumulations of
gas hydrate into the ocean, which could potentially have a damaging effect to the ecosystem.
These new
projects, managed by the Energy Department's National Energy Technology Laboratory, will focus research on field programs for deepwater
hydrate characterization, the response of methane
hydrate systems to changing climates, and advances in the understanding of
gas -
hydrate - bearing deposits.
Projects are to utilize existing field data, and / or collect field data (including log, core, and remote sensing data) to evaluate the occurrence, nature, and behavior of
gas hydrate geologic systems.
In 2008, Canadian and Japanese researchers extracted a constant stream of natural
gas from a test
project at the Mallik
gas hydrate site in the Mackenzie River delta.
