The number of cysts can vary from day to day, so best chances of detecting this form of
Giardia lies in collecting samples over three days for a
fecal flotation
test or conducting individual
tests every two or three days until at least three
tests have been done.
A
fecal ELISA or PCR
test is preferable to a
fecal flotation
test because it checks for the presence of
giardia antigens.
A
fecal float only detects
giardia cysts, which may or may not be in the particular stool sample being
tested.
Your veterinarian will
test the blood and urine to rule out liver or kidney conditions and may perform a
fecal exam to rule out parasites,
giardia and bacterial infections.
Definitive diagnosis of a
giardia infection requires not only a
fecal sample analysis, but also a special
test to detect the presence of antigens in the bloodstream.

A much more sensitive PCR
test detects the DNA of
Giardia species in a
fecal pellet.
Another diagnostic method is a
fecal flotation
test performed with zinc sulfate as the floating medium used to reveal
giardia cysts.
Have your veterinarian run a combination of
fecal tests including: ovo / parasite floatation and
Giardia / Whipworm ELISA.
In addition, an antigen
test may be run on the
fecal sample to check for the presence of
Giardia.
The
Fecal and
Giardia tests should be performed approximately one week prior to your pet's stay with us.
