Kenyan Goldman Prize winner Ikal Angelei has dedicated her life to fighting the construction of
the Gibe 3 Dam, one of Africa's largest hydropower projects.
2012 Goldman Prize winner Ikal Angelei has been a leading voice of opposition to
the Gibe 3 Dam, one of Africa's largest hydropower projects.
However, with China (the project's biggest investor) still on board, construction continued and today
Gibe 3 is nearly complete.
Angelei spoke with me about
Gibe 3's threats to the Turkana region a few days before her Goldman Environmental Prize was announced.
The Gibe 3 dam is built on the Omo river, which is shared between Kenya and Ethiopia and is the main source of water for Lake Turkana.
But Ethiopia has started to construct a dam —
the Gibe 3 along the Omo River — that would change the entire lake ecosystem.
