For the most part, it is a trying time for investors, especially for those retirees who live off of their investable assets, with fairly flat to negative returns from
global equity markets while bond and dividend
yields remain painfully dismal.
The high
yield market has had a positive correlation with
equity markets for many years when comparing the percentage change in spreads (over Treasuries) for key high
yield indices vs. the percentage change in level for
equities, and this correlation has become even more pronounced since the
global financial crisis.
The majority of
global equity markets have posted negative returns, bond
yields are near record lows, the loonie has fallen to levels not seen in over 11 years, and, to top it all off, there are some steep tax hikes on the immediate horizon.
