The
God of the bible is sovereign,
loving,
gracious, and just.
The covenant at Sinai also begins with a brief historical introduction («I am the Lord your
God who brought you out
of the land
of Egypt») whose explicit purpose is to document
God's
gracious intentions toward Israel and to engender Israel's desire to be a faithful servant who would
love her lord above all other competitors.
God so
loved the world He gave His son Christ... I would not want my last hours on earth to be filled with only kind words, but also with the truth
of salvation thru Christ... because
of God's
gracious love.
The building
of the local hospital, the ambulance that got me there before I died from blood loss, the image
of God in the paramedics that made them give their lives to rescuing people they've never met, the wisdom
of the surgeon, the intelligence and skill
of the thousands
of individuals whose discoveries have made operating theatres and anaesthesia possible — all
of these are
gracious gifts
of a
loving God, whose mercy enables healings to take place across the world that would, in any other generation, be considered quite miraculous.
Jesus is the
gracious justice
of the
God who is
love.
The biblical answer to this problem is to first
of all recognize that we have the
gracious and
loving forgiveness
of God, but then to admit to
God that we have actually messed up our lives by failing to live according to His instructions, and then seeking to take steps and make changes which allow us to live according to
God's will.
Gracious God, in Jesus Christ you teach us to
love our neighbors, but we build dividing walls
of hostility.
God extends it out
of his
love, simply because He is
gracious.
But remember,
of course, that theological truth about a
loving,
gracious, and forgiving
God helps lots
of people out
of the bondage to religion, laws, and guilt.
What are we to make
of God's
gracious mercy to us, the proof
of God's
love for us, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for the ungodly?
notice, those whose talents are spent vilifying the Word
of God have no interest in the merciful,
gracious, and
loving, side
of God.
If
God really is violent, but Jesus revealed none
of this violence, then the real lie is Jesus hiding this side
of God from us so that He appeared more
loving and
gracious than He truly is.
Our Queen has been «
gracious» and «noble» and «victorious» in the things that really matter — hope and faith in Christ,
love of God and
of the people she's been graced to serve.
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, «The Lord, the Lord, a
God merciful and

But if we understand
God's «glory» as precisely the divine
Love - in - act, with its rejoicing in the joys and its sorrowing with the sadness
of God's human children — indeed the glory which is nothing other than the divine generosity,
gracious welcome, and unfailing faithfulness in mercy and forgiveness, then the phrase is rich in meaning.
Judas who did not repent, but instead hanged himself or Peter, who bitterly repented and restored
of the
love intensly coming from the Creator and Redeemer
of the world toward his unbelievable bitter denial
of friendship to a much superlative
gracious God!
What the New Testament does do is to portray the
gracious message
of an open access to that same
God whose depth
of accepting
love is seen on a cross and whose presence in the life
of that crucified one is designed to call forth from us the same awe, reverence, and obedience to those rules
of life through which we find the fullness
of life, the depth
of love, and the meaning
of our own humanity.
His understanding
of God placed
gracious love in the center.
This kind
of internal contradiction seems to run through much traditional theology; it finds explicit expression in Luther's dichotomy between the terrible
God, who put him not only in awe but in utter terror, and the tender and
loving God whom he knew in Jesus Christ as the savior, the
loving friend, and the
gracious Father
of men.
There is a good deal
of the central message
of the Gospel here;
God's
gracious and forgiving
love is powerfully described.
God speaks
of his people living lives
of gracious and generous giving,
of prudent and wise decisions (something never very popular in our culture), our time and money and
love, our lives, a sowing towards life.
But
God is not capricious, and so there must instead be something wrong with our understanding
of prayer and it works in connection to our
loving,
gracious, and relational
God.
If the center
of the Christian world view is a
gracious and
loving God, then the sermon will be delivered in a
gracious and
loving way.
This is the age - old, liberating Old Testament and biblical faith — that against all indications to the contrary, in all
of time,
God remains the Lord
of history — a
gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast
love.
The very heart
of the gospel is that the life and death
of Jesus reveal the unconditional,
gracious love of God.
If the Christian continues to believe in the
gracious and providential
love of God after Auschwitz, then not only is he once more denying the humanity
of the Jew, but he is also inevitably denying the pain

What Nygren has shown is that the Reformers» doctrine

God can do through Jesus Christ, and to serve human need, engaging in good works which reflect the nature

God gives to man and which takes on the special character
of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Universalists,
of which I am one, hope that in the end all souls will recognize and accept the
gracious love of God and that
God's
love by its nature is never withdrawn.
Perhaps he might have been most disappointed by the way his original revelation — «the generous
love of a
gracious God» — was somewhat lost along the way.
